The Dalmatian Pelican, a flagship species which inhabits Karavasta lagoon, needs constant conservation measures to provide the right peaceful reproduction site and to return in its glorious days. For this reason, in the frame of the project "Management of Wetlands and Dalmatian Pelican Conservation in the Mediterranean Basin", PPNEA in close cooperation with Regional Administration of Protected Areas (RAPA) and with the support of Noe Conservation, EuroNatur have built for the last two years the artificial platform in Divjaka-Karavasta National Park, to support the pelican’s island.

The nesting platform is supplied with materials usually used by pelicans as nesting materials including branches of shrubs, reeds and glass-wort in order to be more attractive for pelican`s. Its construction aims to increase the nesting space capacity for the Dalmatian Pelican’s colony (the island of Bazhori) where historically nests, which is vital for them.

First pelicans have been observed using the artificial platform for roosting during June. These are very good sign that in the coming years the Dalmatian pelicans will use his platform as a breeding site.
