Lead is poison.

Ban it now.

There is no safe level of lead exposure, which is why we banned it from petrol, paint and pipes. Yet more than 44,000 tonnes of lead are still dispersed into the EU environment every year from hunting, sports shooting and fishing.

This must stop now!

Why do we need to ban lead in ammunition and fishing weights?

Lead has severe impacts, from damaging human health, to poisoning animals and polluting the environment. There is an overwhelming and growing body of evidence exposing the risks from the toxic effects of lead ammunition in hunting and sports shooting, and in fishing weights.

Non-toxic alternatives

There are effective, affordable, and safe alternatives to lead in ammunition and in fishing.

Alternative ammunition in hunting and sports shooting

The most typically used non-toxic alternative to lead shot is steel shot. It’s equivalent in price and readily available.

Alternative materials for hunting and sports shooting with bullets

For bullets, alternatives are typically composed of copper or brass.

Alternative materials for fishing weights

Safe, affordable alternatives to lead sinkers exist. They are made of materials like tin, bismuth, steel, ceramic, and tungsten.

Examples of ammunition

Lead

Lead bullets fragment and disperse on impact, making it difficult to remove from game meat.

Copper

Copper bullets remain relatively intact, making them easy to remove from game meat.
