We are delighted to share important news about the Balkan lynx. A Balkan lynx individual has been photographed by one of our camera traps in a new area of southeastern Albania, between Korça and Skrapar regions.
This represents the southernmost confirmed record of the Balkan lynx in Albania and across the entire Balkan region, providing valuable scientific evidence on the presence and distribution of this critically endangered species.
Every new record helps us understand better how the Balkan lynx uses its territory, identify key habitats, and monitor its distribution. Data from this area, which extends beyond the species’ core habitats known to date, are particularly important, as they may indicate a potential expansion into new southern territories or the use of previously undocumented ecological corridors.
These findings strengthen conservation planning efforts and improve our understanding of habitat connectivity in Albania.
Our experts will analyse the original image captured by the camera trap and compare it with photographs and data collected over previous years in order to confirm the identity of the individual. At the same time, additional camera traps will be installed in the area to continue monitoring efforts and gather further information on this mammals presence, movements, and habitat use.
For the Balkan Lynx Recovery Programme (BLRP), every verified record is of exceptional importance. Each new piece of evidence brings us one step closer to understanding the distribution of this subspecies and protecting the ecological network upon which its survival depends.
