This sixth edition of the publication focuses on migratory birds and their flyways, and what they reveal about the state of nature, the drivers of biodiversity loss, and the solutions needed to reverse declines.
Migratory birds undertake extraordinary journeys, travelling between breeding and non-breeding areas along routes known as Global Flyways.
Birds are powerful indicators of environmental health. They are extensively studied and monitored, enabling a detailed assessment of the status of migratory birds across the world’s terrestrial and marine flyways. These species present a unique conservation challenge as they are exposed to multiple threats across borders.
The findings are alarming. One in nine migratory bird species is threatened with extinction.
But we have a solution: The Nairobi Declaration.
Leaders from government, finance, policy and conservation, with representatives from the BirdLife Partnership, will commit to recognising migratory birds as indicators of planetary health and flyways as the connective tissue that no single nation can protect alone.
