BALKAN GREEN BELT

“The European Green Belt, our shared natural heritage along the line of the former Iron Curtain is to be conserved and restored, to function as an ecological network connecting high-value natural and cultural landscapes whilst respecting the economic, social and cultural needs of local communities.”

The European Green Belt initiative has the vision to create the backbone of an ecological network that runs from the Barents to the Black sea, spanning some of the most important habitats for biodiversity and almost all distinct biogeographical regions in Europe. By following a course that was in large sections part of the former east-western border – one of the most divisive barriers in history – it symbolizes the global effort for joint, cross border activities in nature conservation and sustainable development.

PPNEA is a partner NGO of this initiative and member of EGB association, mainly involved with the area of what is called “Balkan Green Belt”.

Together with EuroNatur, SPP Greece MES Macedonia, ERA Kosovo and CZIP, PPNEA is working toward the protection and preservation of several Balkan Green Belt pearls which correspond to a network of protected areas: Prespa National Park, Ohrid-Prespa Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park, Korab-Kortitnik Natural Park, Butrinti National Park, Shkoder lake Habitat/Species Management Area and Albanian Alps.

ANALYSING THREATS, DEVELOPING SOLUTIONS AND BUILDING CAPACITIES IN THE SHARR/ŠAR PLANINA/KORAB-KORITNIK

The vision of the project is to prepare the basis for a sound and long term conservation of the outstanding mountainous landscape of Sharr/Šar Planina/Korab-Koritnik in line with a sustainable development of the region whereby the local population acts as main driver in both regards. The aim of this project is to work on specifying measures for nature protection and support of a sustainable regional development in the area.

STRENGTHENING OF LOCAL ACTION GROUPS AS STAKEHOLDER FOR BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION IN THE SHARR/ŠAR PLANINA/KORAB-KORITNIK

Strengthening of Local Action Groups as stakeholder for biodiversity protection in the Sharr/Šar Planina/Korab-Koritnik region shared by Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia. The vision of the project is to prepare the basis for a sound and long term conservation of the outstanding mountainous landscape as well as sustainable development of the region with the local population as active drivers in both regards.

DRIN DAY

The Drin River Basin is one of the most important freshwater biodiversity hotspots of Albania and of Europe. With the help of Drin project / Act4Drin we have celebrated for several years (2016-2017-2018) the Drin Day though interesting activities aiming to raise awareness among of local communities and the wider public on the importance of the Drin River Basin and its freshwater ecosystems.

GREEN BELT DAY

The project focuses on the field of nature protection by promoting sustainable development and the protection of the natural environment for present and future generations. It integrates within the so-called ‘Stabilisation and Association process’ for the adoption, implementation and enforcement of all EU rules, known as aquis that Albania is undergoing (European Union, 2016)…

SUPPORT TO THE MANAGEMENT OF PROTECTED AREAS IN BORDER REGION OF ALBANIA, KOSOVO AND NORTH MACEDONIA IN MONITORING OF ENDANGERED SPECIES

Korab – Koritnik / Sharr is a transboundary area shared between Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia. Due to its rich biodiversity and other natural vales, this area is protected by law in Albania and Kosovo, while North Macedonia is taking significant steps towards its proclamation as a protected area.

Through this project, PPNEA aims to raise regional capacities on endangered species monitoring and generate, for the first time, regional data regarding wildlife distribution in the area. Our team will conduct theoretical and practical sessions with the neighbouring stakeholders, in order to teach them the best practices regarding endangered species monitoring.

At the end of the project, we will produce a detailed report on wildlife distribution in the transboundary area of Korab-Koritnik / Sharr.
