Wetland Contracts – A New Model for Nature Conservation
Mediterranean wetlands are sensitive ecosystems of high natural value, yet they face serious threats, including pollution, rapid urbanization, and inadequate water management. A lack of coordination and limited institutional capacity further hinders their conservation.
To address these challenges, the “WE GO COOP” initiative introduces Wetland Contracts, a collaborative governance tool, tested in EU projects, that strengthens partnerships between local actors, institutions, and communities for the protection of these vital areas.
What are Wetland Contracts?
They are agreements between communities, institutions, and organizations to jointly manage wetlands, key areas for biodiversity, climate resilience, and local economies.
Near the Narta Lagoon, within the Vjosa–Narta Protected Landscape, a “WE GO COOP” meeting took place, bringing together local and international stakeholders. Roma Tre University shared experiences from Italy and France, including the restoration of the Camargue wetland through cooperation with farmers and authorities.
The Wetland Contracts tour will continue, bringing more people, ideas, and concrete actions for the conservation of these extraordinary natural .
