A Balkan lynx family, a proof of the existence of another lynx population in Albania, a hope for the survival of this subspecies in our country!
The most exciting news about Balkan lynx in Albania! The camera traps set as a result of an excellent cooperation between PPNEA and NAPA-RAPA Elbasan in the region of Polis-Guri i Zi, have revealed an unimaginable extraordinary surprise and the highest result expected.
A Balkan lynx family composed of three individuals was captured by the camera traps on 16th February 2020. This proof of the reproduction of Balkan lynx is the primary indicator for the existence of another population in Albania. After the Munella region in north Albania, the region of Polis-Guri i Zi, has now become the second region in Albania where the Balkan lynx is proved to reproduce, and the third region in all the Balkans (including Mavrovo National Park in North Macedonia). The monitoring study in this region is being carried out jointly by PPNEA and RAPA Elbasan in the frame of the Balkan Lynx Recovery Programe Phase V. and it aims to investigate further the presence of Balkan lynx after the last evidence of an individual captured in December 2018 by the camera traps of RAPA Elbasan. Apart from the proof of Balkan lynx reproduction, this evidence proves the most southern location/distribution of the Balkan lynx in all the Balkan peninsula.
