Mediterranean monk seal, a rare species in Albania visits every day Vlora Bay
Since April, PPNEA has been continuously in contact with locals in Vlora and gathered valuable information for the presence of Mediterranean monk seal in this area. In addition, in the framework of “Eastern Adriatic Monk Seal” project, PPNEA in collaboration with RAPA Vlore has monitored Karaburun Penisula and Sazan Island for the identification of potential areas for the survival of this important species. According to the videos, it looks that this juvenile individual it’s not a visitor but a resident of Vlora, present since April – according to locals. Mediterranean monk seal has an “Endangered” status according to IUCN and through years the main threats for this species has been habitat destruction, water pollution and its direct kill. *Due to the presence of this species, we would like to remind again to locals and tourists to not disturb, stress this friendly individual.
