During the monitoring of camera traps in the Polis-Valamar ecosystem, we observed the presence of an individual Balkan lynx. These findings are important for gathering data on the lynx population status in Albania. This species is critically endangered, with fewer than 10 individuals remaining in our territory, indicating a decline in their numbers. This decline is attributed to habitat destruction due to infrastructure development and illegal killings. Despite capturing images of some critically endangered species, our observations indicate a concerning trend in previous seasons. Immediate conservation efforts are crucial for their recovery, beginning with minimizing deforestation and illegal logging, followed by reforestation initiatives and enhancing patrols to enforce laws against poaching.
