Vacancy Specification: Policy Officer
PPNEA is recruiting for a Policy Officer with a specialist focus on nature conservation and biodiversity protection. Species and habitats are at the heart of all of the PPNEA work, and are the focus of some of our most complex and contentious policy work, from tackling the causes of direct persecution and the licensing of species control, to species recovery and reintroductions. The post holder will play a key role in developing, coordinating, and supporting specific policy work and work with the Head of the Policy programme and project managers.
Key activities will include:
Supporting high-level advocacy: Working with colleagues to engage and advocate with relevant environmental institutions and networks, to influence the development of sustainable policies for nature protection in Albania, making the case for the protection of Albania’s natural habitats and species.
Contribute to policy and legal analysis: Undertaking analysis of current practices and evidence of impacts, developing PPNEA policy and advocating the need for change, and working across topics referring to legal, policy, and political contexts in which PPNEA operates.
Contribute to campaign planning and delivery: Working with Communications colleagues to support the design of new and ongoing policy and advocacy campaigns, to tackle issues and threats to important habitats and species in the country.
Engage with networks: Relationship building across our network and with wider stakeholders and designing and delivering engaging network campaigns.
Monitor nature conservation policy and legal developments: Monitor and assess compliance of the decision-making with national laws and regulations.
Experience and skills:
Essential
- A relevant education degree level or equivalent such as law studies, political studies, international environmental policy etc. or experience relevant to the role.
- Able to analyze complex issues in a fast-paced environment.
- Able to negotiate with and influence others e.g. professional, persuasive, engaging, and confident.
- Knowledge of relevant campaigning platforms, processes and audiences
- Good communication and presentation skills and ability to communicate to a wide variety of audiences
- Commitment to and familiarity with environmental issues in general and nature conservation issues in particular;
- Committed to cooperative working and independently, and considerate and respectful of others;
- Independent and self-motivated;
- Ability to work occasionally outside of the office, involving national and international travelling, representing PPNEA’s interests and concerns.
Additional
- Practical experience of operating in a policy and legal role.
- A “hands-on” individual also able to operate at a strategic level
- An understanding of environment/biodiversity policy in general, and species policy in particular
- Established network with environmental or other relevant campaigning networks
- Innovative and resourceful, with an ability to champion and develop new ideas and support others in doing so.
