Protecting species while confronting habitat threats
As part of the Eastern Monk Seal project, in collaboration with the Mediterranean Monk Seal Team, PPNEA recently participated in a trip to Heligoland, becoming part of an extraordinary experience where we witnessed firsthand the protection of this species in their habitat. This experience highlights a profound contrast with Albania, representing a parallel reality. On one hand, the presence of Mediterranean seals along the shores of the Vjosë – Nartë Protected Landscape and the Karaburun – Sazan Park is evident. On the other hand, the pressing concern of constructing luxury resorts within these protected areas poses one of the most significant environmental challenges we face. Amidst this contrast, experts have offered insights into successful conflict management strategies between humans and gray seals. They have shared valuable experiences regarding protective measures implemented in countries like Germany and we are deeply committed to implementing these lessons to support the recovery efforts of the endangered Mediterranean monk seals in our region.
