PPNEA, carried out a pioneering restoration action during the last week, for the alder forest habitat (Alnus glutinosa), in Lesser Prespa, following the model and efforts of PrespaNet partners in the other two sides of the Prespa basin. This action is important because it is identified as a priority wetland habitat type in the European level, known as alluvial forests, part of Annex 1 of the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC. This habitat has a very limited distribution, and such actions contribute to its protection and expansion. PPNEA and RAPA Korçë, worked together with a local nursery in the Korça region to produce the first 300 seedlings, with seeds collected in locally in the Prespa basin. This action brought together students from High Schools “Fuat Babani” Bilisht and High School of Pustec, pupils from the primary school of Treni, environmental staff from the municipalities of Bilisht and Pustec, and representatives from local organizations. PPNEA believes that nature conservation requires the involvement of new generations in order to develop environmental awareness and knowledge. This action was carried out as part of the ‘’Prespa Project- Biodiversity Conservation in the Prespa Transboundary Basin’’, supported by Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust – PONT, EuroNatur, and AAGE V JENSEN NATURFOND.
