How can we help preserve the rare Mediterranean Monk Seal? Let’s do something together!

On 14-15 February, PPNEA conducted educational sessions with children from “Spiro Gjiknuri” and “5 Deshmoret” schools to raise awareness on the Mediterranean Monk Seal.

Through board games, the students gained an understanding of the biology, morphology, and ecology of the species, as well as the significance of conservation. They also discovered how they can take action to protect the aquatic ecosystem in marine protected areas such as Karaburun-Sazan and Porto Palermo-Llaman, where this species is present.

In a separate activity, PPNEA convened a gathering with local fishermen in the area. The meeting increased the visibility of the Rescue and Information Network Team (RINT) in key, potential areas for the Mediterranean Monk Seal population in Himarë and Saranda. It also served as an opportunity to express our gratitude to the local fishermen who help to protect this species and discuss the progress of the studies we are carrying out.

We thank the Regional Administration of Protected Areas of Vlora for their cooperation in this effort.
