PPNEA roars with urgency as it brings to the forefront the heinous case of the illegally slaughtered Balkan lynx, its precious body shamefully displayed in a restaurant near the city of Elbasan. Despite this brazen act being exposed to the public and authorities back in 2020, the court and prosecutor institution have failed to take the matter seriously.
But tomorrow, on the 23rd of March, justice will finally be served as the First Court of Elbasan convenes for the next court session.
PPNEA, powered by a fierce determination to protect the environment and all its inhabitants, implores the responsible institutions to show the gravitas this case deserves and to take swift action against such environmental atrocities. The European Union’s recent report on Albania highlights the increased incidence of environmental crime, with the poaching of a majestic Balkan lynx in Elbasan last year remaining unprosecuted to this day.
The Balkan lynx, a critically endangered species according to the IUCN and protected by national and international laws, holds a significant place on the red list. Its survival is crucial, not just for Albania but for the world. The Bern Convention itself compels the Albanian government to actively participate in its protection, and it’s time for us all to rally together and take action against environmental crimes that threaten the very existence of this marvelous animal.
By bringing public and institutional attention to this cause, we can mobilize a unified response to safeguard the remaining Balkan lynx individuals in Albania. It’s time to rise up in defense of our environment.
