The National Park’s accomplishment cannot be turned into a National Bargain.

The Members of PPNEA were present at the ceremony of declaring the Vjosa River National Park, celebrating this event of national importance as well as supporting all the organizations that have worked to achieve this result. The first wild river to be declared a National Park, sets a good precedent for the conservation of nature that exceeds the borders of Albania.

Unfortunately, Vjosa will not be fully protected. The declaration of the Vjosa River National Park has left aside perhaps the most important area of this river, its delta, which is the Vjosa-Nartë protected area, where the same government is supporting the construction of an international airport a few meters from the lagoon.

After concluding the welcome speech, the Prime Minister resumed an intimidating speech affirming that “here is someone who continues to bother us with the birds of the Vlora airport”, and continuing with the assertion that despite everything “the work for the construction of the airport will continue.”

The narrative of nature conservation, propagated during the Prime Minister’s welcome speech before the airport issue was mentioned, was rejected by the latter himself who chose to publicly ask civil society organizations “not to bother” about it.

The “pile of documents” mentioned by Prime Minister Rama is a pile of evidence presented by environmental organizations to oppose the construction of the airport within the protected area.
