Meeting for the Mediterranean Seal in the Eastern Adriatic

Meeting for the Mediterranean Seal in the Eastern Adriatic

First phases results for preserving the Mediterranean monk seal in the eastern Adriatic Sea.

The first phases initiated in 2018 have revealed the presence of a seal project habitat in all four project sites (Albania, Greece, Montenegro, and Croatia), with a frequency related to the proximity to Greece. Public attitudes towards the monk seal in Albania, Montenegro, and Croatia are positive, and project activities have worked towards raising public awareness about seals.

However, the main threat to the survival of the Mediterranean monk seal in the Adriatic Sea is habitat degradation.

The project has identified three main priorities for conservation efforts in the region: habitat protection, monitoring of the local population of seals, and education and awareness campaigns aimed at the general public.

Participants from RAPA Vlora, Flag Pine NGO, and representatives from the operators of tourist boats in Vlora all took part in the presentation of these exciting results!
