The Flight of Destruction: Vlora International Airport and the Lost Bird Paradise

Known for its rich biodiversity, Vjosë Narta is considered one of the jewels of the Mediterranean, with over 200 bird species and hundreds of thousands of individual birds passing through each year during the migration period.

This outdoor learning laboratory becomes a “sanctuary” for endangered species, attracting over 20,000 waterbirds on average every winter and hundreds of breeding pairs every summer. This asset provided the Protected Landscape international recognition, designating it as an area of special conservation interest for the European continent, in addition to the protection it receives under Albanian law.

The Albanian government has been requested by the highest European institutions and the Bern Convention, whose annual meeting is taking place this week, to halt the airport construction project in this region!

The ongoing construction in opposition of national legislation and international treaties is demolishing one of our nation’s most valuable treasures and casting doubt on Albania’s status within Europe!

“Stop the Airport” was produced by journalist Artan Rama, author of the “Elementi i Pestë” and “Sipas Natyrës” series.
