During the work over the years for the conservation of the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus) in Albania, PPNEA created “Savers of Egyptian vulture” network, consisting of shepherds, vets, hunters, farmers etc. located near the breeding grounds of this vulture. This local network is considered as one of the key actors that can play a main role in conserving this globally endangered species.
On Friday 5th, PPNEA organized a workshop with the members of the SEV network, and held presentations on various topics, including awareness raising of this community about the negative impacts of the poisoning practice and alternative methods that can be used in order to solve human-wildlife conflicts. Furthermore, it was discussed on how the presence of the Egyptian vulture in these areas or avitourism can serve as a main tool for generating income for the local community.
Besides the local community, this workshop was also attended by representatives from RAPA Gjirokaster, Food Safety and Veterinary Institute, and National Inspectorate for the Protection of Territory Gjirokaster, who gave a more complete overview of the legal framework for the use of poisons, or punitive measures for this illegal practice, already considered an environmental crime.
This workshop has been implemented within the framework of the Egyptian Vulture New Life and Balkan Detox LIFE projects, which aim to reduce the poisoning of wildlife, especially of vultures, in t he Balkans and beyond.
