Bird banding is processed usually during migration or when the nestlings are about to leave the nest for the first time, giving us the chance to know more about their birth place, age or migration sites.
Among other ringed birds that are observed in our country, the most special for our team is this flamingo individual which was ringed 10 years ago near Izmir, Turkey, exactly in a 681 Km aerial distance from the observation point in Narta lagoon.
Nature and its recovery has been in the focus of international media last days. Recently, this has brought Narta Lagoon and the flamingos within to the attention of very prestigious media like The Guardian, The Telegraph, Euro News, Yahoo News and channel Asia, and among them also Albania’s Prime Minister Mr. Edi Rama, recently published the news of flamingos in this area to send positive messages for the future and to show the importance of this habitat for the migratory and wintering, and breeding bird species.
However, strategic investments plans of the Albanian Government in the Vjosë-Nartë protected landscape, like the construction of an international Aeroport and touristic resorts within the protected area, pose a real threat to the tranquillity and values of this lagoon. This infrastructure will have a destructive impact by interrupting the breeding attempts of Flamingos in Narta’s saline, removing one of the most important stops along the Adriatic Flyway for migratory birds and taking away the nesting sites for many bird species listed in the EU Birds Directive.
Tenders for such investments have been currently suspended but they have not been CANCELLED!
We call for these plans to be CANCELLED so that the protected landscape will still have the chance to provide us with its irreplaceable natural services and to remain the place of many of nature’s birthdays and manifestations in the future!
