All white stork pairs are already back in Albania and have re-occupied their nests. The famous pair nesting in the platform installed by PPNEA and OST in Gjirokastra is continuously monitored by our team giving us a reflection regarding the breeding ritual of this species. The future parents of white stork population are fully engaged in the progress of their breeding season. Each of the two individuals is finding its time to systemize the nest, incubate and meanwhile to feed themselves.
Last year the same nest was home to 4 hatchlings from which only two of them managed to start their flight for survival, meanwhile the two other youngs shortly after fledging were not seen coming back to their nest. We believe that the cause of their absence was due to the two of main threats migratory birds encounter during their migration, like collision or electrocution with energy infrastructure or illegal killing.
Hoping that in all the nests we will have a successful number of hatched eggs, together with our partners we will make sure that all individuals on all of 4 pairs in Albania safely start their migration to Africa!
Happy World Migratory Bird day with these pictures of some of Albanian magnificent storks!
