INVESTIGATIVE MEDIA DENOUNCE THE USE OF PESTICIDES AND POISONS
The use of pesticides and poisons in Albania has attracted media attention. The investigative show “STOP” has recently denounced this issue while stating the unparalleled environmental damage caused by the use of pesticides. Through interviews and hidden camera footages, taken from 3 agricultural pharmacies in Kornispol, they proved that products out of circulation for commercial use were still being sold in these marketplaces. Furthermore, the situation aggravates with the trade of poisons used towards wild animals like the European badger (Meles meles), wolf (Canis lupus) and the Mediterranean tortoises (Testudo sp). Although the sellers were aware of the high toxicity of such chemicals and the indirect impact on human health, they still continued to sell them. Moreover, the poisoning of wolfs and other large carnivores, is a serious threat for the scavenger species like Golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) and Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus), whose population has drastically decreased precisely because of this factor. PPNEA in collaboration with national and international partners are implementing several actions aiming to stop the use of poison baits.
