The international conference on forest wilderness in Europe, organized by the Brandenburg Academy “Schloss Criewen”, was held on the 17th and 18th of September 2020. The conference brought together researchers, policy makers, managers and forest owners from Germany, Poland, Austria, Ukraine and Albania. During the two days of discussion the participants articulated the history, present situation and even the future challenges on the preservation of the Pan-European natural forest heritage.
Our presentation was focused on the importance of ancient beech forests (Fagus spp) in Albania, their actual situation, as well as PPNEA’s long-term contribution towards preserving these unique natural values. The most representative examples of beech forests in Albania are found in Gashi’s River and Rrajcë, which are both Natural World Heritage sites under UNESCO.
